Last month, programme members Graded Films hosted a screening in collaboration with Neon Picturehouse and the Film & TV Charity for their latest short film, Break the Cycle.
The event underscored the importance of mental health support and fair working conditions across the screen industry. Held at FOMO House in Hackney, it provided an opportunity for networking and open discussions about the challenges faced by industry professionals.
The evening culminated in a screening of Break the Cycle, a short film created by Graded Films in partnership with the Film & TV Charity. The film explores the profound impact of working conditions on individuals, particularly how the industry’s demands often affect mental health.
Produced by Graded Films founder Freddie Hill and directed by Joseph Morel, the project reflects their own experiences within the industry. Both spoke at the event, sharing insights on their treatment in the workplace and emphasizing that fair working conditions are not only achievable but should be considered the industry standard.
Graded Films founder, Freddie Hill, said “The event was everything we hoped it would be. A commonplace for big voices to come together and mingle, and to continue spreading the word, and the amazing and vital work the Film and TV Charity carry out”.

Recent findings from the Film & TV Charity revealed that 79% of industry workers are concerned about their finances, and one in three have considered leaving the profession. The event addressed these alarming statistics through a panel discussion featuring the project’s collaborators, who shared their experiences and perspectives on improving industry standards.
Additionally, the event highlighted the Film & TV Charity as a vital resource for those struggling with the issues depicted in the film. For over a century, the charity has supported industry workers and advocated for fairer working conditions, offering a 24-hour support line and actively campaigning for improved rights across the sector.
